A story can be as simple as a conversation.

Bring your story to life through the use of different platforms.

The power of using other platforms to help create your story can go along way. By using multiple platforms and techniques when talking about a assigned story, more viewers can view it, ultimately, growing your following. Social Media Optimization is a technique that helps posts stand out. Social Media Optimization is also known as SMO within newsrooms.

Hashtags, links and photos all help to “spice up” your post while bringing outside sources into the viewpoint of your story. By linking, it can bring people to the main source of information. Visuals help tell the story because it brings the reader to the topic you are covering.

In today’s society, it is valuable to write for what people have time for; that is one of the reasons social media is so popular. It is key to write mobile friendly stories that people could read timely and still receive the most possible information. By viewing post analytics, one can measure their success. This is a big benefit to newsrooms and can help view their user experience and decisions in a positive and negative light.

While working at the Integrated Communications Office for Quinnipiac University, I am able to help run the social media pages. On Facebook and Instagram we review the post analytics to compare to our competition. This helps the office to realize what we are doing both good and bad. We use these analytics to help distinguish what we should and shouldn’t do in the future for our social media posts. For example, one of the tasks I had to do was look at the different kinds of posts we had on Facebook and which posts had the most feedback, in terms of likes, shares and comments. It was clear that the posts with multiple images got the most feedback because they were putting a “real life” aspect to the information we were outputting.

Above you will see some of the analytics from a recent Facebook post Quinnipiac University posted.

As far as my social goes, I think I can do a better job on enhancing my twitter. I rarely check twitter and when I do, I tend to only retweet. Due to the fact I lack original content, my analytics are poor. My goal for the rest of senior year is to make my twitter more professional and engaging for things I want to do. I would love to start doing video/vlog reviews on different entertainment or news events. Stay tuned...
